Independence in Criticism
At Rated Cinema, we represent a rigorous response to the homogenization of film criticism. Our editorial methodology is designed to separate technical craft from marketing hype.
The Ethics of Analysis
Our ethical commitment to unbiased reviews is absolute. We maintain a strict separation of advertising and editorial critique. Reviews are never adjusted based on audience reception, box office performance, or studio pressure. To ensure transparency, we disclose the nature of every screening—whether theatrical, digital, or festival-based.
Critics at Rated Cinema are prohibited from accepting gifts or compensation from production houses. Any prior professional relationships with directors or studios must be formally disclosed to the Senior Editorial Board before a project is assigned.
The Methodology of the Score
Our 10-point qualitative scale is built upon four non-negotiable pillars.
Narrative Innovation
We evaluate the structural pacing and Narrative Stakes against the film's intended genre goals. We look for dialogue depth and thematic consistency over commercial templates.
Technical Execution
A formalist analysis of lighting, framing, and sound design. This includes the functional clarity of dialogue and the emotional resonance of the musical score.
Cultural Relevance
Situating new releases within historical context. We measure how a work interacts with the lineage of its director’s body of work and broader cinematic movements.
Originality
The distinct aesthetic or structural "voice" of the film. We prioritize direction and screenplay risks over technical perfection without visionary purpose.
Vetting the Critic
Technical Background
All staff critics are required to hold at least five years of professional experience in film scholarship, industry production, or editorial critique.
Diverse Perspectives
Our rotation policy ensures that no single genre is dominated by a solitary voice, fostering a healthy internal discourse before final publication.
Peer Review Protocol
Final scores are peer-reviewed internally by senior editors to ensure alignment with our established qualitative scale and historical benchmarks.
Clarifying the Standards
Mainstream aggregators often rely on a "yes/no" binary or fan-based voting. Rated Cinema utilizes a 10-point scale where a '5' represents technical competence without innovation. A '10' is reserved for works that achieve technical perfection or fundamentally change the cinematic landscape.
We separate our reviews into two distinct phases. Technical assessments and general narrative analysis remain spoiler-free. Any deep dive into structural twists is strictly quarantined behind a prominent warning and located at the end of the manuscript.
Yes, we accept advance screeners to provide timely analysis for our readers. However, viewing a screener creates no obligation for a positive review. If a film is reviewed post-release, we state this clearly in the "Screening Type" disclosure metadata.
We do not claim 100% objectivity; all art critique is subjective within a professional framework. However, by using a multi- critic weighting system and standardized technical audit points, we minimize the vacuum of personal preference.
